Asphalt driveways in Naperville

Naperville Asphalt Driveway works on asphalt driveways for Naperville homes. We pave new driveways, tear out and replace old ones, and fix the cracks and potholes in the one you already have.

Every job starts with a visit. We measure the driveway, watch where the water runs off it, and check the base under any broken spots. Then we write you a quote that lists each step of the work.

New and replacement driveways

Asphalt driveway installation

For a new asphalt driveway installation, we dig out the area, lay a stone base and pack it down hard, then put down the asphalt and roll it. We spend the most time on the base, because that's what holds the driveway up.

Asphalt driveway replacement

If your driveway has cracked all over, sunk in places or crumbled at the edges, patching may not be worth the money. With asphalt driveway replacement, we take the old one out, fix the base and pave it again.

Driveway extensions

Need room for one more car? We build driveway extensions onto the side of the driveway you have now. Naperville has firm width rules, which we cover further down.

Driveway grading

If water sits on your driveway or runs back toward the house, we look at the grading. With driveway grading, we reshape the ground under the driveway so the water runs off where it should.

Tar and chip driveways

We build tar and chip driveways by spraying down hot liquid asphalt and pressing stone chips into it, which leaves a rough finish that looks like gravel.

Asphalt millings driveways

We lay asphalt millings driveways from old asphalt that has been ground up. We suggest them for long driveways and back lots.

Repair and upkeep

Asphalt driveway repair

Our asphalt driveway repair work covers patches, sunken spots and broken edges. If the damage goes too deep for a repair to last, we'll say so.

Crack filling

With crack filling, we clean out the cracks and fill them before water gets in and freezes.

Pothole repair

For pothole repair, we cut out the broken asphalt, fix the base under it and fill the hole with new asphalt.

Asphalt resurfacing

If the base is still sound and only the top has worn, asphalt resurfacing puts a new layer of asphalt over the old one.

Sealcoating

Sealcoating means spreading a thin coat of sealer, called sealcoat, over the top of the asphalt to protect it. Ask what the sealer is made of. The U.S. Geological Survey says coal tar and coal-tar pitch, used in some sealcoat products, are classed as known human carcinogens, which means they are known to cause cancer in people. It also says coal-tar sealcoat usually holds about 1,000 times more PAHs than sealcoat with an asphalt base. PAHs are a group of chemicals the USGS calls a potential concern for human health and aquatic life. The USGS adds that coal-tar sealcoat is more common east of the Continental Divide. So make sure the sealer type is written on your quote.

Parking lots and businesses

Home driveways are only part of what we pave. For Naperville businesses, we handle parking lot paving, parking lot striping and commercial asphalt paving for shops, offices and churches.

Naperville's driveway rules

Before you put in a new driveway, the City of Naperville wants a Driveway Permit application from the property owner. The city's Driveway Guide says you also need a permit to rebuild an existing driveway if you're changing anything about it.

A home driveway has to be at least 9 feet wide and no more than 20 feet wide, measured at the property line.

The guide also sets how thick the asphalt must be. Outside your property line, in what the city calls the right-of-way, it asks for 3 inches of asphalt on a 6 inch stone base. On your own side of the line, it's 2 inches of asphalt on a 6 inch stone base.

The apron is what we call the end of the driveway where it meets the street. If yours will be brick pavers, stamped asphalt or stamped or colored concrete, the city wants a Right-of-Way Encroachment License Agreement sent in with the permit application. Concrete in the apron and the public sidewalk can only go in from April 15 through Nov. 15.

One more rule people miss. The guide says the owner has to keep the part of the driveway outside their property line in good repair, sidewalk section included, at their own cost.

We'll tell you up front if your job needs a permit and who is applying for it.

Questions about asphalt driveways in Naperville

Do I need a permit to redo my driveway in Naperville?

For a new driveway, yes. For an existing one, the city's guide says rebuilding it needs a permit if you're making any changes. We check your plans against the city's rules before we start.

How wide can my driveway be?

Naperville allows home driveways between 9 and 20 feet wide at the property line. If you want more room, ask us what fits your lot under those rules.

Can you just fix the cracks?

Yes. If the base is still in good shape, we can fill the cracks and patch the bad spots instead of replacing the driveway. We'll tell you if it's past that point.

Should I seal my asphalt driveway?

That's your call. If you do, ask for a sealer with an asphalt base, not coal tar, and have the product name written on the quote.

Which towns do you cover?

We work all over Naperville and in nearby towns such as Lisle, Bolingbrook, Warrenville and Aurora. The full list is below.
